The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday proposed significant limits on levels of lead in processed baby food that could reduce exposure to the contaminant by as much as 27%. The FDA estimates the new limits could cut lead exposure by 24-27% from processed baby foods. High levels of lead exposure can cause brain damage and other problems, particularly in young children. The proposed limits would not be binding, however. Rather, the FDA said, it "would consider these action levels, in addition to other factors, when considering whether to bring enforcement action" against a food manufacturer that exceeds the limits.

Measles is one of the most contagious human viruses and is almost entirely preventable through vaccination. A record high of nearly 40 million children missed a measles vaccine dose in 2021 due to hurdles created by the Covid pandemic, the WHO and the CDC said in a joint report. While measles cases have not yet gone up dramatically compared to previous years, now is the time to act, the WHO’s measles lead, Dr. Patrick O’Connor, told Reuters. Last week, the public health department in Columbus, Ohio, reported a measles outbreak with 24 active cases, according to the NBC News affiliate WCMH. The new report estimates that in 2021, around 128,000 people died of measles worldwide.

Private insurance and Medicare cover eight at-home tests a monthSince January, the Biden administration has required private insurers and Medicare to cover up to eight at-home tests per month. Free at-home tests from the government are no longer availableThe federal program that distributed up to 16 free at-home tests to households through the mail ended Sept. 2 because of a lack of congressional funding. At-home tests (also known as antigen tests), meanwhile, rarely give false positives but can give false negatives, even if someone is symptomatic. For other people, Covid tests never come back positive even though they feel sick and were exposed to the virus. In a study of college athletes with Covid, meanwhile, 27% still tested positive one week after their first positive tests.
